Hair How To's

How to pick the style
Finding a hairdresser’s communication style can be difficult to say the least. You need to do a little research before you get a haircut. When you are going to see a new hairdresser or you want to change your look, find a picture that illustrates what you want to go for. Look online or in magazines for pictures of hairstyles. Try breaking down the pictures you see. What I’m saying is that just because a guy wears eye-liner and you don’t, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the greatest bangs or sideburns you’ve ever seen.  Look at a haircut in pieces. What do you like about the sides?  The back of a haircut? You can take them apart and mold them into a look for yourself.

Don’t be afraid to speak your mind to your hairdresser
Instead of telling him or her that your haircut looks like a lawn mower ran over your head, keep cool and ask a question. “Would it be totally crazy if we took a little off the top too?” or “Can you keep is simple?” Followed by, “I’m kinda lazy and won’t ever use gel/mouse/hairspray.” This defuses the potential for your hairdresser to take their sissors and give you a haircut like Borat.

Hair has to grow on you
Once you’ve found a look you like, it may take a while for you to grow into it. You and your hairdresser can work together to get you into that look.  Hair requires training. A new haircut can cause your hair to freak out and be unmanageable for a few days while it gets used to doing a new thing. That’s why Friday and Saturday are good days for men to get haircuts. It gives your hair a day or two to relax and gives you a chance to practice with it. Having a consistent relationship with a hairdresser and being specific about what you want will give you confidence and help you be more relaxed about your hair.

Don’t be afraid to speak your mind
Although, I do have to say that as a hairdresser it can sometimes be scary to have someone say they want to change. Often times when people come to me, they are vague about what they want and they sound unsure about really changing. As a hairdresser, I don’t want to change something for someone who isn’t sure. So be confident about what you want.  Hair grows about half an inch a month, so if you get a cut you don’t like, it will probably be grown out in a couple weeks.  We always say that for a guy, the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is about two weeks. But if you have a good hairdresser and you get a haircut you don’t like, give them one more try. Many hairdressers will gladly fix any mistakes you find or change things you don’t like.

Learn to love what you have
Another trend that I’ve noticed is that people love to fight with their hair. If it’s curly they want it straight and vice versa. A hairdresser can adjust hair to look better and work to correct symmetry, but only a doctor can nip a little off your big nose!  Work with what you got and don’t fight nature. Make peace with your hair. It will be one thing less for you to worry about in life. Let your hairdresser fuss over you and make you feel good and happy. Relax. After all, if you really think about it, it’s just hair.
