Exiting the Comfort Zone

Call it women's intuition, but chances are, you're clad white, black, grey, brown, or blue as you read this. Am I right? If so, proceed to the following paragraph. [If not, congratulations. You are finally ahead of the game.]

It's your parents' fault. They wrapped you in a blue blanket at birth. It's Home Improvement's fault. The men on that show carried their heavy, powerful machinery in such safe, muted tones. Why don't we point fingers at Johnny Cash while we're at it? "The Man In Black," he showed them who was boss in '57 at the Grand Ole Opry.

While there is nothing wrong per se with white, black, grey, brown or blue, do keep in mind that many famous artists employ every shade of the color wheel...  And so should you. For there are few things in life more impressive - Picasso's and Dali's aside - than a guy who walks confidently down the street in a pink shirt.

Maybe you're happy in your conventionally masculine hued t-shirts, maybe it ain’t broke so we shouldn't try fixing it. But it's sexy when a man challenges life's conventions with a strong sense of self. And donning a sherbert orange sweater is one surefire way to do so. It may be a bit traumatizing at first to pick up that lavender frock hanging forlornly in Lacoste, but baby, isn't your comfort zone looking a little... monochromatic?

The truth is, every color in the spectrum has wardrobe wearing potential. Reds, pinks and purples, though stereotypically feminine shades, are just as flattering on men as they are on women. And when was the last time you heard someone claim that a woman wearing blue looked masculine? Why should you, as a guy, be held to a different standard? Are these equal times we're living in or not?

Remember the painters who mixed such exquisite colors for their canvases? Choose the shades you want to live your life in with the same expertise. Maybe an eggplant purple shirt brings out your olive skin tone. Or lemon yellow draws attention to the drizzle of blonde in your hair. The key is to approach colors with an open mind. Think we women won't notice how celery green accents the flecks of forest in your eyes? Well, you're wrong. (Just like you are about everything else!)
