Duke Lacrosse - I think it’s a shame what has happened to these kids. They were brutalized through the media and anybody who follows the story knows their names. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson all went down to Durham when the event happened and crucified the kids. Their names cannot recover from the damage it went through. They are owed apologies by everyone, but they probably won’t get it.
What they need to do (and this isn’t something that I normally condone) is sue. I am not sure who, but someone (or many people) need to be held responsible for the damages that these innocent kids went through.
Don Imus - First of all, let me say that I am not a fan of Imus’ show and I don’t condone what Imus said about the Rutgers women’s basketball team. He ruined all the good feelings that they had about an improbable run in the NCAA tournament and it was a stupid and inexcusable comment.
That being said, I don’t feel he should be singled out. People should be offended when those words are used, whether it is in our music, poems, etc. It doesn’t matter; women should never be degraded in that manner.
That being said, I don’t think Imus should have gotten fired from his radio show. Again, yes I know it was a stupid thing to say but whatever happened to the First Amendment? When people start getting fired over things they said on the radio, it becomes a clear violation of the First Amendment.
Additionally, there is no proof of malice involved. Anyone who has listened to his show knows that he says these sorts of things about everyone, and judging by his ratings, some people like what he has to say. I think Imus’ suspension and the cancellation of his simulcast on MSNBC were well deserved but that was it. This firing crossed the line.
Hockey Playoffs - I am glad that all three New York area teams made it into the playoffs but does anyone really care? I realize that the playoffs are a lot better then regular season but I still don’t care enough to dedicate time to watch it. And even if I wanted to watch it, I wouldn’t know where to find it.
